2015 Stray Kat 500

image
Doing my typical “Driven Dirty” routine, I was loaded up and heading west.

image
Just outside of Chetopa, KS, I came upon Jim Pike and Mike Meeker pulled over on the side of the road. Jim got towed about a mile into town on a tow strap, where we’d hang out with him while he tried to figure out the problem.

image
At first, I parked over in the shade, and thought that could make a cool photo!

image
Snapped this cool shot of Mike Meeker’s coupe, too.

image
Another group of hot rodders stopped by to lend some moral support. I moved the truck over to act as a work bench.

image
Finally determined that it was a bad rotor in Jim’s distributor. Unfortunately, we could not find one anywhere near Chetopa.

image
A few hours later, we were under way, with Jim being pulled around 65 miles on a tow strap! I have a new level of respect for him.

image
I took this shot of Duncan Cox’s ’47 coupe, out in front of Travis Miller’s “Two Tall Okies” shop.

image
The sun was pretty bright, so sorry for the glare. This Model A pickup was pretty dang sweet.

image
Butch’s Rod Shop built this killer ’40 Standard sedan, and now Roger Ward owns it. One of my favorites!

image
This Model A Vicky was super neat.

image
I should know the name of the owner of this ’34 sedan, as I know a bunch of the same guys that he does, but dang it…it’s just plumb evading me. Neat car that has been around the Springfield area for YEARS!

image
Jim was able to get a rotor for his roadster by 8am Saturday morning. It was great to see him pulling into the show under his own power.

image
Didn’t catch the name of the owner of this ’41, but I sure did like it.

image
Jack and Judy Gaskill brought the sedan over to Dewey this year. They were also kind enough to poke along on the way home with me!

image
The CrossMembersCC gang that gathered at the Stray Kat 500: Me, Jimmy “The Gentile” Spears, Kyle Wynes, John Loftin, DrDave Meyers, Jeff Smith (doing some kind of Ricky Bobby thing with his hands), and the always handsome Chris LeGrange (Chris’s words, not mine).

image
Jerry Curry’s latest ride. Man, oh man, was the roadster cool.

image
I didn’t notice it when I took the photo, but the Burger King sign did a great job photo bombing this one.

image
It was great to see Ernie and Bobbi Maine again. Great folks!

image
My parking spot for the Sunday events. Little did I know that 4 of the cars in the photo would take home awards!

image
A shot from the other end with Jack and Judy’s 36

image
Lined up in the awards line. This ’40 Deluxe nailed the “Shine Runner” theme, with a killer flathead, sporting Eddie Meyer Heads and dual carb intake.

image
Looking the other direction.

image
Travis Miller took this photo of the presentation of the award that the truck was selected for. What you can’t see is that there’s a gas can on the passenger side, due to the fact that the bonehead owner ran it out of gas in the awards line.

image
On the ride home, I couldn’t help but smile every time I looked at my side view mirror.

image
Rolled 80,000 miles, somewhere just to the east of Coffeyville, Kansas.

image
Back home, with the award that the truck received.

The event was a GREAT time, and it is always cool to get to spend time visiting with the friends that I have made over the past few years over at the Stray Kat 500. If you have the chance to go, it’s well worth the trip!
